A
Little Cambridge History For Your Cambridge
Wedding Planning
Cambridge Ontario was
originally founded by three people. In
1806, John Erb started a sawmill on the Speed
River and named the area he setttled Cambridge
Mills, which later became known as Preston, one
of the three founding cities of modern day
Cambridge.
In 1816, William
Dickson founded his settlement close by
Cambridge Mills, naming it Shade's Mill.
Shade's Mill would later be re-named Galt,
another of the three founding cities of modern
day Cambridge.
Hespeler is the third
of the three founding cities. Originally
known as Bergeytown, and then New Hope, Jacob
Hespeler's building of a dike, followed by a
gristmill, sawmill, distillery, woolen mill, and
a coppershop, saw the area grow into a thriving
town. They renamed the town Hespeler in
1859 in Jacob's honor.
